The best facility to off-load and on-load rail in San Antonio and with fuel costs rising, moving goods by rail is a cost-effective strategy for controlling shipping costs for customers. This facility which is now fully operational, has a 30’ clear height and a 24,000 square foot fully covered rail “Chicago” dock. There were a number of challenges faced and overcome during construction, the greatest of which was building on land that was previously an Air Force base and prior construction without permits. This meant uncovering numerous objects that were not shown on drawings of existing utilities and working with several departments and agencies to maintain compliance and meet the requirements off all parties. Due the massive size of the building, egress to meet fire code also came into play. Initially a tunnel under the rail was proposed. A self supporting bridge and stairs turned out to be more cost effective and CDB and its team of subcontractors designed and constructed it under the dock which meets Union Pacific standards for rail car clearance.
